Why do Christians use God's tolerance as an excuse?

They use it to explain grey areas in the Bible, justify their sins to make themselves or others they care about feel better, and to reinforce faith in God. Doesn't this weaken the concept of religion? How long before all evil actions become acceptable towards him? Isn't this a plan that will eventually backfire?
